about

Wildlife Sound Recording Society (WSRS), Restricted Winner - Habitat Class.

'The Pit Pond' is an underwater recording made in the ex-mining village of Easington Colliery, County Durham, late September 2020. The series of lockdowns made me interested in overlooked habitats on our doorstep. Picture-perfect locations are desirable, but urban environments widen accessibility. This somewhat neglected pond, appropriately named "Pond of Life", is a semi-permanent habitat that shrinks to merely a puddle during drier months.

The recording demonstrates a wealth of activity, featuring pulsing plant photosynthesis alongside chirruping invertebrates. It was recorded in stereo using a Zoom F8 and Aquarian Audio hydrophones, and mixed binaurally to emphasise the immersive nature of underwater listening.
